Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
