Trump Demands Jailing of Chicago Leader and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek demanded the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of state military troops in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite vehement protests from state officials including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying put."

The governor responded via online channels, stating: "I will not yield. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from the Lone Star State had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 50 miles from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its hardline urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has called Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, such as murders.

That day, two hundred state guard members were scheduled to arrive to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, per sources. Officials indicated the soldiers would avoid law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers in combat attire with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off sanitation facilities and essential items. Trailers were arranged in rows. Additional fencing was placed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the military base for safety concerns until early December.

The administration has intensified deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the military dispatch, urging a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

A court hearing on their case is scheduled for Thursday.

The mayor also signed an executive order on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using city-owned property as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic federal law limits the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has said he would be willing to invoke the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to put down an insurrection or are defying federal law.

Since starting his new administration, the president has sent or mentioned sending troops to at least 10 urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the military presence is necessary to fight violence and defend ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses across the US has declined in recent years. In the city, for example, murders were down nearly one-third to 278 through August, per law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on that day revealed that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
