McDonald's has removed a holiday advert made with Artificial Intelligence after receiving significant online backlash.

The brief spot was developed with the help of generative AI clips and was initially published on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the employment of AI in the commercial. A number of labeled it "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This moment represents an valuable learning as we investigate the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various things that might go awry during the festive season, with the theme "the most terrible time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Campaigns that include generative AI have become a rising trend among major brands, particularly for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched consecutive AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: As segments produced with generative AI are more likely to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised fears about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some commenters noting it could affect work for camera crews.

Response from the Production Company

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the reception for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-created holiday ad from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, other businesses have also received criticism for employing AI in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "lazy" and "disturbing".

The incident underscores the continuing debate within the advertising and creative industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
