EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
